Overview
The Recreational Pilot Certificate is an entry-level aviation credential that allows individuals to fly small aircraft for personal enjoyment. It provides a simplified pathway to becoming a pilot, requiring less training than a Private Pilot Certificate. Recreational Pilot Requirements
- Be at least 17 years old.
- Be able to read, write, speak and understand English
- Posses a valid third class medical certificate.
Recreational Pilot Privileges
- Fly a light-sport aircraft or a general aviation aircraft that does not exceed:
- 1 passenger
- 180 horsepower
- 4 seats
Recreational Pilot Limitations
- Fly in visual flight rules (VFR) weather conditions between sunrise and sunset
- Not exceed 50 nautical miles from the departure point
- Cannot carry property for compensation or hire
- Limited to flight in Class G or E airspace below 10,000 feet above sea level or 2,000 feet above the ground which ever is higher.
- Must have a medical certificate issued by an FAA-authorized aviation medical examiner or operate and comply with basic med.
- Flight is limited to the United States

Depending on your training arability a private pilot certificate is typically obtained within two to three months.

- Create an account at the FAA application site IACRA.gov. This is where all of your pilot certificate applications will be published. Right now all you need is to register an account. You will complete the certificate application with your instructor.
- Create an account and complete an application for a third class medical certificate.
- Set up an appointment with a Medical Pilot Examiner and obtain your medical certification.
